The Scottish Colourists: Art and Life, 2026
This is the story of Samuel John Peploe, John Duncan Fergusson, George Leslie Hunter and Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell, four artists united by a commitment to bold design, expressive brushwork and, above all, brilliant colour, whose shared passion for modern French art transformed the course of Scottish painting.
Born in Scotland in the 1870s and 1880s, each artist travelled to France and encountered the vibrant avant-garde movement at first hand. Inspired by artists from Manet and the Impressionists to Cézanne and Matisse, they returned with fresh ideas that brought new energy and international perspectives to the Scottish art scene. Individually and collectively, the four artists became leading figures in the development of modern art in Scotland.
Richly illustrated and informed by new research, this book explores the Colourists' remarkable lives, artistic achievements and enduring legacy, revealing why their work continues to captivate audiences around the world.
