Caroline Walker's Theatre (2021) will be on display at Modern One from 12 July 2025.
Theatre is a collective portrait of NHS staff working during the Covid-19 pandemic. It was painted following Walker's residency at the maternity wing of University College London Hospital and is an example of her ongoing commitment to picturing lesser-seen women's work. Above all, it is an astonishing reflection on the first moments of motherhood, a portrait of an experience that is recognisable to many, but which is rarely, if ever, reflected in paint.
